A kitchen renovation is a major undertaking. Done right, it can add tremendously to your home’s value, but if your kitchen renovation is not planned and executed well, it can become a costly disaster. Begin your planning by deciding what your end goal is. Once you have a vision of the kitchen that you want to have, you can begin.

While the most expensive part of renovating your kitchen is likely to be new appliances and new cabinets, do not forget that you will also have to paint your kitchen. Even if you like the current color of your kitchen walls, when you begin to remove old counter tops and trim, this paint is likely to become chipped, scraped, or otherwise need replacing.

Take samples of your new counter tops and cabinets with you when you shop for paint for your kitchen. If you are planning to put in a back splash on your kitchen, pick out that tile first. It is easier to match paint to tile than it is to match tile to paint. Ask for samples of the tiles and paint to take home to look at as you make your decision about which to use. Examine them both during the daytime and at night before picking a paint color.

Wait to paint until you have completed the rest of your kitchen renovations. When you begin to paint your kitchen remember to start by draping your kitchen counters and other surfaces with a drop cloth so you do not ruin your brand new kitchen counters and appliances with paint. Fill in any holes in the wall left by contractors or picture hooks with spackle. When the walls are smooth, it is time to paint at least two coats. Use a small brush at the edges to keep from accidentally painting the walls or floor.
